Nanjing

Nanjing, also abbreviated as Ning, is the capital of Jiangsu Province and its political, economic and cultural center. It lies at the lower reaches of Changjiang River and belongs to the Nanjing, Zhenjiang hilly areas. The whole territory is dotted with hills and winding waters. It possesses a beautiful natural landscape, and is long since famed to be the "dwelling place for tigers and dragons".

Nanjing is a famous historical and cultural city and a famous Chinese ancient capital. Historically, there have been ten dynasties which established their capitals here, hence the fame of "the Capital of Ten Dynasties". These ten dynasties are: Eastern Wu (229-280), Eastern Jin (317-420), the Southern Dynasties (Song, Qi, Liang, Chen) (420-589), Southern Tang ( 937-961 ), the early years of Ming (1368 -1420 ), Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851-1864), Provisional Government of the Republic of China (1911 年).
As long as 5,000 years ago, there appeared primitive tribal villages here, and its city history dates back to 2460 years before. It was originally called Yue City. During the Warring States period, the Chu Kingdom set up the Jinling Yi (meaning city) on the Shitoushan Hill. In the Qin Dynasty, the name was changed to Moling. During the Three Kingdom period, Eastern Wu set up its capital here, called Jianye, and making Nanjing to be a capital for the first time in its history. In the last years of Western Jin, the name was changed to Jianlang. Afterwards, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen all set up their capitals here. Historically, they are called Six Dynasties. It was called Shen Zhou (meaning prefecture) in the Tang Dynasty, and renamed Jiangning in the Song Dynasty. Only until the beginning of Ming Dynasty was it officially called Nanjing.

Nanjing is now in jurisdiction over 10 districts: Xuanwu, Baixia, Qinhuai, Jiangye, Gulou, Xiaguan, Yuhuatai, Qixia, Pukou, Dachang, and 5 counties: Jiangning, Jiangpu, Liuhe, Lishui, Gaochun. The City's total area is 6516 sq. km. (including suburban counties), the urban area is 867.21 sq. km.

Nanjing is a famous tourism city in China. Ever since the Six Dynasties, the area along the ten-li Qinhuai River, especially the Confucius Temple area, both culture and trade have been most thriving. Now it is a famous resort for both foreign and Chinese tourists to go sightseeing, do shopping, enjoy snacks and have fun. Both within and without the City's stone walls, tourism attractions are everywhere. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, solemn and austere; the Great Changjiang River Bridge, spanning over this natural moat; Jinling Hotel, soaring all the way to the sky; Xuanwu Lake and Mochou Lake, crystal and shinny as two glasses; the Ming Tombs and the Ancient City Walls, these architectures from Ming and Qing Dynansties so full of primitive simplicity. Nanjing, this ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, is now inviting Chinese and foreign tourists with its magnificent and elegant beauty, plentiful tourism items, scenic spots and historical sites.
