In 1864, Shanghai Gas Co., Ltd. was founded. In 1865, China's first gas company was founded in Shanghai. The photo shows the huge steel-structured gas tank built near the bank of Soochow Creek in the 1880s.

The earliest "gas light" in Shanghai appeared in 1865. Because its pipelines came out under the ground, so it was also called "ground fire" by Shanghai people.

In 1881, Shanghai was equipped with telephone, and in 1882, the first telephone booth of Shanghai Mutual Telephone Co., Ltd. was built on the Bund.
In 1882, China's first water company was founded in Shanghai. The photo shows the water tower beside the office of the Shanghai Water Works Co. on Kiangsi Road.

In 1901, Leanse, a Hungarian, took two motor cars to China. These were the earliest cars in the streets of Shanghai.
On March 5, 1908, the first tramway ran on the roads of Shanghai.

In November, 1914, the first trolleybus ran on the roads of Shanghai.
On October 9, 1924, Shanghai possessed the first bus.

In 1847, Oriental Bank Corporation of Great Britain established a branch in Shanghai. It was the first foreign bank in China.
The first Chinese capital bank was Commercial Bank of China initiated by Sheng Xuanhuai and jointly owned by the government and merchants, which was opened on the Bund in July, 1897.

Russo-Chinese Bank was the first Chinese-foreign jojntly owned bank in China. Its headquarters was situated in St. Petersburg in Russia, and Shanghai Branch started business on the Bund in 1896.


The first comprehensive exchange in Shanghai--Shanghai Security and Goods Exchange started business on July 1, 1920.
